Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) is a W3C API specification that allows computers to communicate independently of an operating system or platform by using HTTP and XML. SOAP toolkits let you easily communicate with ArcWeb Services in Java, .NET, ColdFusion, or any other programming language. For a look at how this API compares to the others, see the ArcWeb API chart.
The ArcWeb Services implementation of the SOAP API allows you to perform the following functions:
The SOAP API documentation includes authentication information, tutorials, samples, object descriptions, and error messages. It also includes steps for updating your v2006 applications and overviews, method descriptions, and notes for each ArcWeb service listed above.
To use SOAP with ArcWeb Services, you need an active subscription to ArcWeb Services. Most ArcWeb requests consume credits from a user account. See Understanding credits and costs for more information.
ArcWeb Services use authentication to validate access to services and data. See the authentication section for details.
