Using REST v2006 to access ArcWeb Services

The Representational State Transfer (REST) API is an inherently lightweight and intuitive Web interface for viewing ArcWeb Services maps. The ArcWeb Services implementation of REST takes advantage of vector mapping technology. The REST API makes direct calls to ArcWeb Services through a Web browser.

The ArcWeb Services implementation of the REST API easily allows you to perform the following functions:

Create vector maps.
Pan and zoom in and out on vector maps.
Add acetate lines, points, and polygons to vector maps.
Add a graticule, legend, north arrow, and scale bar to vector maps.
Use the best map projection or specify a map projection for vector maps.

The REST documentation includes information on generating a map, projections, tutorials and samples, and error messages.

Access and authentication

To use REST with ArcWeb Services, you need an active subscription to ArcWeb Services. Most ArcWeb requests consume credits from a user account. See Understanding credits and costs for more information.
