Uploading data
You can use Builder to upload your own data to use with ArcWeb Services.
You can upload a database (DBF) file of locations or a compressed shapefile
(in ZIP format) with point, line, or polygon data. When you upload data,
ArcWeb creates a default layer for it. You can modify this layer once
you have uploaded your data. You can also upload custom icons (symbols)
to use with layers and map services.
TIP: To view
a slide show highlighting the primary steps of uploading data and using
it in a custom map service, click
here.
There are several ways to add data to the Content Library:
Click the link to view the steps to perform each task.
To upload a data file
- Click the Build tab. The Build Tools main page appears.
- Click Upload Data and Create Layer. The Upload Data File page appears. (You need to be logged in to access
this page; if you are not logged in, you are prompted for your user name
and password.)
- Click the Browse button to open a dialog box that lets you navigate
to a file on your local system. You can upload either a compressed shapefile (ZIP) or a database (DBF)
file. Once selected, the file name appears in the text box.
File requirements- Shapefiles must be compressed in a ZIP format.
- Shapefiles must not contain any reserved fields.
The following fields are reserved by ArcWeb and cannot appear in
your data: DATE_CREATED, DATA_FILE_ID, DATE_DELETED, GEOCODE_DATASRC,
GEOCODE_STATUS, GEOMETRY_POINT_COUNT, LAST_MODIFIED, OBJECTID, OWNER_ID,
and SHAPE. - Files cannot have more than 50 string fields,
50 number fields, or 50 date fields.
- String fields cannot have more than 2048 characters.
- Number fields cannot have more than 16 decimals.
- We recommend that shapefiles have corresponding
.PRJ files.
- The maximum file size you can upload is 10 MB.
To upload a file larger than 10 MB, break up the file into several smaller
files. Upload one of the smaller files to create a new data file, then
add records to this new data file by uploading the remaining data files
one at a time. Click here to learn how to add
data to an existing data file.
- The maximum number of points for one feature
currently is limited to 30,000. If needed, you can use software such as
ArcGIS to generalize your data.
- Click Next. The Set Field Properties page appears.
- Specify details for your data.
For a shapefile, you can:
- Specify an alias. Each field has an editable
text box that lets you type in an alternate name for the field.
For
a DBF file, you can:
- Select a geocoding service to plot your data
on a map and optionally format the addresses. You must select a geocoding
service if your data does not contain x,y coordinates.
- Specify an alias. Each field has an editable
text box that lets you type in an alternate name for the field.
- Align your data fields with geocoding fields.
For fields in your data that correspond to geocoding fields, choose the
appropriate field from the menu in the geocoding column.
NOTE: If you upload
street addresses, ArcWeb geocodes the addresses and adds the results to
the table. You are sent an e-mail report on the results of the geocoding
process.
- Optionally, specify advanced options. Click the Advanced Options button to open the Advanced Options page.
On this page, you can choose a projection and select fields to include
in searches.
- A default projection appears based on your data.
To change the projection, enter a different projection string or ID. Click
the Select a Projection link to view a list of available projections and
their associated string IDs.
- To identify fields to include in searches, select
the check box for the field in the Index column. You can select up to
2 fields per field type to be indexed (meaning, you can index at most
2 date fields, 2 number fields, and 2 string fields).
- To specify a type for a field, choose a type
from the menu in the Type column. You can identify a string as a date,
string, or number. You can only have 10 fields of each type. If you exceed
the maximum number allowed, the system displays an error message.
- Click Next. The Info About This Data page appears.
- Provide detailed information for your data.
An orange letter "R"
indicates the required fields. Provide as much information as possible.
This information helps identify your data and is sometimes called the
metadata. Because this information identifies the data, describes it to
other users, and return in searches, make this information as complete
as possible.
- Click Save.
A Data Upload Status page appears that displays the progress of the
upload. During this upload, you can open additional browser windows to
work on other projects.
When the upload completes, a page appears with information about your
data. On this page you can click Edit Data File to open the Content Library
and modify your data information or you can click Modify Layer to use
Builder to make changes to the default layer. You can also click the Share
to Group button to make this data available to other users in your group.
Once you decide to share the data, a button appears that gives you the
option of notifying your group of the new data. Click the Notify Group
button to send an e-mail notification.
- Click
Done to return to the content list or click Upload Another to select another
file to upload.
NOTE: Once you
upload a data file, you cannot change the geometry type. You need to upload
the data file again to change its geometry type.
NOTE: The attribute
columns are reordered to alphabetical order. To reorder the columns in
a request, use the returnFields
parameter.
To add records to
existing data by uploading another data file
- From the Build tab, choose Browse & Edit. The Content Library page appears.
- Filter content by data file. Select My Library > Data Files in the filter boxes and click View
Results.
- In the results, click the Edit icon for the data
file entry that you want to modify. The Edit page appears and highlights the possible changes.
- In the Upload Data section, click the Upload button. The Builder window opens.
- Click the Browse button to select the file on
your system that contains the data you want to add.
- For DBF files, you select a geocoding service
if your data does not contain x,y coordinates. Also specify if you want
to format the addresses.
- Click Next. The data uploads to ArcWeb. When finished, an Upload Complete page
appears. You can choose to upload additional data or click Edit Data File
to modify the data or add an individual record.
- Click Done to close the window.
To add a single
record to an uploaded data file
- From the Build tab, choose Browse & Edit. The Content Library page appears.
- Filter content by data file. Select My Library > Data Files in the filter boxes and click View
Results.
- Find the entry for the data file you want to modify
and click the Edit icon.
- In the View Table section, click the Edit button. The Edit Data page appears. This page displays the current data.
- Click the Add Single Record button at the bottom
of the page. An Add Record dialog box appears with the fields as defined by the
existing data.
- Complete the fields and click Submit. The record is added to the data file.
