Uploading a shapefile

In this tutorial, you can step through the process of uploading a sample shapefile, arranging the data, and creating a default layer.

Follow these steps to upload and set up a sample shapefile:

  1. Save this sample file to your computer and remember where you save it.
    Download ArcWeb_Sales.zip

The sample file defines sales areas.
  2. From the Build tab, choose Upload Data File.
If you are not logged in, you are prompted for your user name and password. The Builder windows opens and displays the Upload Data File page.
  3. Click the Browse button to open a dialog box that lets you navigate to the sample file on your local system. Select the file and click Open.
The file name appears in the text box on the Upload Data File page.
  4. Click Next.
The Set Field Properties page appears.
  5. Specify an alias for the SUB_REGION field.
Each field has an editable text box that lets you type in an alternate name for the field. Type "Sales Area" in the alias text box for the SUB_REGION field.
  6. Click Next.
The Info About This Data File page appears.
  7. In the Title box, name your data "AW Sales Boundaries."
The data file name is automatically created based on the Title. Any other information you provide on this page helps identify your data and serves as metadata. For example, in the Purpose text field, you might want to type "Tutorial" to identify this data.
  8. Click Save.
The Upload Data Status page appears that displays the progress of the upload. Messages appear on this page indicating the progress. When the upload completes, a page appears with information about your data.
  9.  Click Done.

You have successfully uploaded a sample shapefile. Next, go to the Tutorial: Modify layer to customize the appearance of this sample data.
