Creating a spatial query service

This tutorial guides you through the steps to create a spatial query service. You will upload a sample DBF file that contains information about fictitious locations of GIS Day celebrations in the southeast, create a default layer, and create a custom Spatial Query service based on that layer.

Follow these steps to create a spatial query service:

  1. Download  the GIS Day sample data file to your local system.
    Sample GISDay.dbf file.
  2. From the Build tab, choose Upload Data File.
The Upload Data File page appears.
  3. Click the Browse button to open a dialog box that lets you navigate to the sample GISDay.dbf file on your system. Select the file and click Open. The file path appears in the upload window.
  4. Click Next.
The Set Field Properties page appears.
  5. Select Tele Atlas NA as the geocoding service and click Next.
This service determines the map locations (x,y coordinates) of the addresses in the sample file.
The Info About This Data File page appears.
  6. For the title of the data (and the default layer), type GIS Day Layer and click Save.
    The Upload Complete page appears.
  7. Click Done.
    The Builder window closes.
  8. From the Build tab, choose Create Service.
The Select Type of Service page appears.
  9. Click Build a Spatial Query Service.
The Builder window opens and displays the New Spatial Query Service page.
  10. In the title field, type "GIS Day Activities" and click Next.
As you type the title, the data source name is automatically completed.

The Select a Layer to Create a Spatial Query Service page appears.
  11. Search for the GIS Day Layer and select it.
Use the filter boxes to find it. Select My Library > My Layers  and click View result. The layer appears in the results. Click the Select button for the layer.
  12. Click Next.
    The Service Summary page appears.
  13. Set up a filter for the service so data fields that have "To Be Determined" in the Activity field are not included.
To do this, click Edit for the Search Filter. The Set Filter Options page appears. Click Yes to filter the data and create a WHERE clause where the Activity field does not equal "To Be Determined." The exact where clause is:
    ACTIVITY <> 'To Be Determined'
  14. Set the default number of results returned to 10 by selecting that value from the Records Returned menu.
  15. Click the Test button and enter a place for a sample search.
Test for an area by providing a place name, such as Tampa, FL and test for a point by providing an address, such as 211 N Tampa St, Tampa, FL. Test using different parameters to ensure the service works. Click OK when satisfied.
  16. Click Next.
    The Save Service page appears.
  17. Click Save.
    A service complete page appears.
  18. Click Done.

You have successfully created a new Spatial Query service. You can view and modify this service from the Browse & Edit command in the Build tab. You can also use this service in a variety of applications, such as a wireless application.
