Creating and modifying layers
You can use Builder to create layers with data you have uploaded and
to make changes to layers. When you upload data, the system creates a
default layer for you. You can modify this layer or create many different
layers from the uploaded data file.
To modify a layer
- From the Build tab, click Modify Layer.
- Filter content by layers. In the filter boxes,
click My Library > Layers and click View Results.
Alternatively, you can filter by Data Files. When you select a data
file, you create a new layer based on that data file.
- Click the Select button in the left column of
the row for the layer (or data file) you want to modify. Click the Info
icon to display details about a specific layer.
- Click Next. The Set Filter Options page appears.
- Optionally, to limit the data included with the
layer, set up a filter.
To set up a filter, click the Yes button. The WHERE clause builder
and Filter statement box are now available. Either use the WHERE clause
builder to create a statement or type a SQL statement in the Filter statement
box. This determines what information to include with the layer. For more
information about SQL and WHERE clauses, see Building
WHERE clauses.
- Click Next. On the Classify Data page, specify how you want to classify your data,
which determines how the data is represented on a map:
- All values—Represents
all data in this layer in the same style.
- Each unique value—Represents
each value in a field differently. When you select this option, the page
displays a menu with fields. Select a field and click Show Values to see
each value for the field. You can also provide an alias for each value.
- Each range of values—Defines
ranges of values of a field to represent with the same style. You can
set the number of breaks for field values.
- Optionally, click Customize Symbol Style. ArcWeb Services uses a default style to represent uploaded data. If
you want to customize the appearance of the data, follow these steps:
- On the Modify Style page, click the Get Style
button to use an existing symbol style. The Style Palette page appears.
- Select an appropriate symbol style and click
OK. The style appears with its current values on the Modify Style page.
- To modify the name, scale, type, size, alignment,
fill color, or outline color values, make the change in the appropriate
column.
- Click OK to save the changes.
- If you want to label a field in the layer, click
Customize Label Style.
- Select a field that you want to label. The field
you select appears in the label on the map.
- Customize the label.
- Click the Get Style button. The Style Palette
page appears.
- Select an appropriate label style and click OK.
The label style appears with its current values on the Modify Style page.
- To modify the name, scale, font, text effect,
size, alignment, fill color, or outline color values, make the change
in the appropriate column.
- Click OK.
TIP: If you create a new label style, you can access it
in the future through My Styles in the Content Library.
- Click Next. The Info About This Layer page appears.
- Provide essential information for your layer.
An orange letter "R"
indicates the required fields. Provide as much metadata information as
possible.
- Click Save.
A page appears with information about your layer. Click the Share to
Group button to make this layer available to other users in your group.
Click Notify Group to send an e-mail notification about the new data.
- Click Done or Modify Another Layer to select another
file to upload.
