Building map services
Use Builder to create or modify a map service. Once you create a map
service, client applications can use the ArcWeb Services API to access
the service over the Internet.
NOTE: The ArcWeb
Toolbar for ArcGIS does not support user-created data sources.
To
create a map service
- From the Build tab, click Build Service. The Select
a Type of Service page appears.
- Click Build a Map Service. The Builder window
opens and displays the New Map Image Service page.
- Provide a title and a data source name and click
Next. The data source name is the technical name used for developer access.
As you type the title, the data source name is automatically completed,
but you can change it if you prefer.
- On the Search for Content page, use the filter
boxes to find and select the desired map services and layers.
NOTE: To add your own points to an ArcWeb map service, you must
create a copy of the map service. See Copying a service
or layer.
HINT: If you are creating a map service from multiple layers,
add the base layers first so newly added layers appear on the top of the
map (and layer list). Alternatively, you can add layers later from the
Edit Map page, where you can position them in the layer list.
- Click Add To Map.
- When you have added the content you want, click
Done and Continue.
- On the Edit Map page, change the map service settings to fit your
requirements. You can
- Change the layer order
—Select a layer in the list and use the Up and Down arrows
to adjust the order of a layer. - Add layers
—Click the Add Layer
icon to select a layer to add to your service. When you add a layer, the
new layer appears above the currently selected layer in the layer list. - Delete layers
—Click the Delete
Layer icon to remove the selected layer from your service. - Display cost
—Click the Cost
icon to display the cost per transaction for the service. - Adjust scale—Click a scale on the scale bar
to adjust the scale. The scale ratio appears under the scale bar. To change
the scale for a layer, drag an endpoint of the layer scale to a new location.
- Modify symbology and map style
—Click to modify the map symbols and styles and their scale
ranges. On the Modify Style page that appears, you can change the size,
shape type, fill color, outline color, scale, and style name. Optionally,
click the icons in the Scale column to specify the number of style breaks
for the layer as well as a unique style for a specific range. - Select a style sheet from the menu above the
preview map to change the preview map appearance. Note that when you select
a style sheet from this page, it does not set a style sheet. To apply
the style sheet, you need to include the style sheet name with the map
request from the client.
- Modify label appearance
—Click
the Label icon to set the label field and customize label properties. - View the current map and pan, zoom, and change
the viewing area.
- Set map boundary
—Use the Select
Area button to draw a rectangle defining your map extent.
- Click Update Map to preview your changes.
- When finished, click Save and Continue.
- On the Info About This Map Service page, provide
essential information for the map service. An orange letter "R"
indicates the required fields. This information becomes metadata that
helps identify your service and explain its features and functionality
to other users.
- Click Save.
A page appears with information about your map service, including service
name, location, and data source name. You can click Share to Group to
make this service available to users in your group. If you share the service,
you can click Notify Group to send an e-mail notification of the new service.
- Click Create Another Map Service or click Done
to close.
