Building services from remote ArcIMS services

With the ArcWeb site, you can create a map service by referencing the URL of an external ArcIMS service. A map service created from an ArcIMS service differs from other map services: ArcIMS services are used "as is"; you cannot use these map services (or their layers) to create new map services, and you cannot modify these map services.

To create a map service based on an ArcIMS service

From the Build tab, click Build Service.
On the Select a Type of Service page, click Access an ArcIMS Map Service.
On the New Map Image Service page, provide a title and a data source name.

The data source name is the technical name used for developer access. As you type the title, the data source name is automatically completed, but you can change it if you prefer.
Click Next.
The Provide ArcIMS Service Information page appears. Identify the ArcIMS service name. The map service name you specify must match the name of the ArcIMS at the remote location exactly. Capitalization is important.
Provide the URL of the ArcIMS service.
If the ArcIMS service requires authentication, type your user name and password for the ArcIMS service. Your user name and password are case sensitive.
Click Next.
Use the preview page to ensure the map service appears as expected. You can use the tools to pan and zoom.
Click Save and Continue.
On the Info About This Layer page, provide essential information for the map service. An orange letter "R" indicates the required fields. This information becomes metadata and helps identify your service.
Click Save.

A page appears with information about your map service, including service name, location, and data source name. You can click Share to Group to make this service available to users in your group. If you share the service, you can click Notify Group to send an e-mail notification of the new service.
Create another service or click Done to close.
